SRIBAT Troops in Haiti Commemorate 2010 Earthquake Victims with Two-Minute Silence &;amp; Marathon Run

20th Sri Lankan Peace Keeping Contingent (SRIBAT) of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), together with Leogane Rotary Club commemorated the catastrophic Haiti Earthquake with the conduct of a Road Race on Monday (12) in Haiti.

Organized by SRIBAT Contingent Commander Colonel M.P.A.K Wijenayake in cooperation with MINUSTAH officials, the Road Race was conducted as one more project of the civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) of the SRIBAT.

The Haiti Earthquake of 7.0 magnitude, occurred on 12 January 2010 destroyed more than 2 lakhs of Haitians and affected an estimated civilian population of 3 million. More than 102 UN officials lost their lives in the worst tragedy and the SRIBAT serving Haiti at that period (January 2010) came under lavish praise of the UN and the victims.

A large number of Haitians, UN officials serving the MINUSTAH, military officers and other ranks of the MINUSTAH and SRIBAT members took part in the commemorative marathon run after all of them observed a two-minute silence in honour of their memories before commencement of the Road Race.

Funds generated and received for the Road Race project are to be used for supply of drinking water to low-income group families in Haiti who are vulnerable to waterborne diseases due to grave dearth of drinking water in the area. This CIMIC project, supported by Leogane Rotary Club, enabled SRIBAT troops to give away 1000 water filter systems after conduct of the marathon run.

Lieutenant General Jose Luis Jaborandi (Jr) of the Brazil Army graced the event as the Chief Guest at the beginning of the event.

Many people, appreciative of the SRIBAT initiative as a commemoration of those 1000s who perished in the tragic disaster, recalled the memories of the services rendered by SRIBAT troops when their kith and kin were instantly buried alive as the 2010 Earthquake struck Leogane.
