Troops Rescue &;amp; Relocate More than 300 Flood Victims in Medirigiriya &;amp; Morawewa

Hundreds of troops belonging to seven battalions of the 22, 23 and 24 Divisions under the Security Force Headquarters-East (SFHQ-E) since early hours on Saturday (20) are tirelessly engaged in rescue and immediate relief operations in flood-affected general areas of Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, Ampara, Morawewa and Medirigiriya as torrential rains and swelling flood waters have caused destruction or damages to more than 300 civilians of nearly 125 houses.

By evening on Saturday (20), the troops managed to rescue about 300 stranded people in above areas and provided temporary shelter in public schools and other common buildings as alternatives until weather conditions improve.

Another segment of the troops has already begun preparing cooked meals for the stranded including more than 90 children. Disaster Management Centre and Polonnaruwa District Secretariat, Divisional Secretariat and other relief officials have come to the assistance of those victims at the time this story was pasted. A stand -by Army medical team has been kept available with doctors and nurses in the event of any emergency, reports from the East said.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army after phoning the SFHQ-E Commander on being informed of the catastrophic situation, instructed him to do all necessary and ensure safety of all victims since water levels were fast on the increase with all sluice gates in the area, now open.
