Responding positively to the vehicular requirements of the Engineer Service Regiment (ESR), now actively engaged in diverse nation-building roles, an initiative, adopted by the Commander of the Army in collaboration with the Treasury, resulted in the Army receiving a special allocation of Rs 40 million for purchase of 20 troop carrier trucks, 20 three wheelers and 20 motorbikes.
With varying involvements in development spheres, these vehicles are to be used for transportation of the troops and other administrative purposes. On Friday (21), the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake symbolically, handed over 20 troop carrier trucks and two three-wheelers, out of the ordered stock to Major General E. M.M Ambanpola, Colonel Commandant, Engineer Service Regiment during a simple ceremony at the Army Headquarters.
Remaining 18 three wheelers and 20 motorbikes are to be handed over to the ESR towards the end of the year once formalities are over.
