Troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Central (SFHQ-C) who performed an arduous task after the landslide tragedy struck Meeriyabedda, Koslanda on October 29, 2014, received words of praise from the Commander, SFHQ-C during a specially convened meeting at the SFHQ-C premises on Tuesday (11).
Army personnel, engaged tirelessly in search and rescue operations which nearly continued for 13 days day and night, braving torrential rains and intermittent mudslides, are to be produced for medical checkups beginning Wednesday (12) in order to ensure their continuous physical fitness and sound health further after having discharged their trying roles and tasks.
More than 1000 Army troops, together with fellow Air Force, Police, Civil Defence Force members and some civil relief workers conducted those relief programmes during the period up until Monday (10).
Ministry of Disaster Management and state authorities decided to abandon further search operations in affected areas in response to the concerns of bereaved family members and due to various other factors. Accordingly, the troops also pulled out from affected areas and returned to their respective formations on the directions of Major General Mano Perera, Commander, SFHQ-C.
Likewise, the troops who recovered some gold jewelleries, currency notes and seemingly important documents of the victims from the rubble, delivered them to the Police for onward investigations and necessary actions during this period.
Army troops during excavations were also able to recover several buried dead bodies, including the remains of a 6-year old girl and the severed head of an old woman.
Sri Lanka Army troops within hours after the tragedy took place jumped into action and rushed its machinery and troops for rescue and relief operations on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake who personally maintained contacts with ground troops during the said period.
