'Anjalikaraniyayi Oba' Salutes Dedicated Parents of Fallen War Heroes

The ‘Anjalikaraniyayi Oba’ (suitable for veneration in firm clasp) felicitation ceremony, organized by the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) for recognition of noble sacrifices and dedication of the parents of fallen War Heroes of the Army took place Monday (27) morning at the BMICH as the second segment of the project.

Representing nearly all Regiments in the Army, a total of 150 parents of fallen War Heroes, who had been already, immortalized with gallantry awards, such as Parama Weera Vibushanaya (PWV), Weera Wickrama Vibushanaya (WWV), Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP), were thus felicitated and their dedication and contribution was highly recognized after inviting them to the occasion.

Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Seva Vanitha Unit, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development as the Chief Guest, graced the ceremony at the invitation of Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, ASVU.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, attended the tribute ceremony as a distinguished invitee and the tower of strength behind implementation of the project.

The project which saw its birth several months ago to coincide with the Universal Elders’ Day as the brainchild of the ASVU, paid tribute to the first segment of those parents in a similar dignified event at the same venue after heaping a string of praises on them.

Monday’s Phase 2 of the project, accordingly saluted 150 parents of fallen War Heroes of Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (5 parents), Sri Lanka Artillery (5 parents), Sri Lanka Engineers (5 parents), Sri Lanka Signal Corps (5 parents), Sri Lanka Light Infantry (10 parents), Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (10 parents), Gemunu Watch (10 parents), Gajaba Regiment (10 parents), Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (10 parents), Mechanized Infantry Regiment (5 parents), Commando Regiment (10 parents), Special Forces (8 parents), Military Intelligence Corps (3 parents), Engineer Service Regiment (3 parents), Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (3 parents), Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps (3 parents), Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (3 parents), Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (3 parents), Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (3 parents), Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (3 parents), Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (3 parents), Sri Lanka National Guard (10 parents) and Sri Lanka Army Pioneer Corps (3 parents) by awarding valuable gift parcels and a special certificate of recognition to each of them.

Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa and Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake gave away those certificates and gift parcels to the parents at the invitation of the ASVU. Several others, including Mrs Indu Ratnayake, Additional Secretary at MoD, Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, Chief of Staff, Major General S.W.L Daulagala, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Mrs Sepali Samarasinghe, Vice President, ASVU and senior ASVU members, were also associated with the award of laurels to those parents, many of who are still in tears in the absence of their dear sons and daughters.  

Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, ASVU as a gesture of recognition of the services, being rendered by the MoD Seva Vanitha Unit, handed over a cheque to the value of Rs 5 m. to Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa during the ceremony.   

Lieutenant General Ratnayake in his brief speech, paid a glittering tribute to them and commended their invaluable sacrifice for the sake of the country as well as supreme sacrifices, made by their beloved sons and daughters.     
 
All those great parents who attended the tribute ceremony were provided with transport back and forth, together with refreshments and other facilities as per specific instructions, given by the Commander of the Army himself, considering distant areas they continue to live.  

Lighting of the traditional oil lamp, one-minute silence in honour of fallen War Heroes, mini video presentation on the value of parents, recital of the ASVU theme song, entertaining features of reputed artistes and the welcome speech, etc added dignity and colour to the event.

A large gathering of senior officers, ASVU senior members, invitees and family members of those fallen War Heroes took part in the day’s event.
