Civilians Begin Paddy Sowing in Released Fields

A simple ceremony, held on Saturday (27) in the general area of Pandarawani Gramaseva sector in Mullaittivu, served by 641 Brigade, marked the beginning of tilling and sowing paddy fields that had been released back to the owners by the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) in accordance with instructions given by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to Ministry of Defence and Urban Development and Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army.

Civilians who own those paddy fields first held a special Pooja to the deities at nearby Pullaiyar Kovil and received religious blessings before they began sowing in the paddy fields that cover a land extent of more than 6.5 acres, earlier held by the Security Forces.

Major General Jagath Dias, Commander, SFHQ-MLT attending the occasion gifted a stock of shirts to the farmers who are engaged in sowing seed paddy after absence of nearly 30 years.

Religious leaders, community chiefs, state officials and a gathering of civilians in the area watched the inaugural ceremony.

Several senior Army officers representing Divisions, Brigades and units were also associated with the event.
