Sri Lanka Army’s 2 Gajaba Regiment troops and 221 Brigade troops in Trincomalee with the support of civil boats and Navy personnel in the seas, adjacent to the Swami Rock of the sacred Koneshwaran Temple premises in Trincomalee, were the first to rush to rescue the two children and the mother who had reportedly tried to commit suicide after jumping into the seas off the precipice recently.
On being informed that a woman with her two children had jumped off the rock precipice on Saturday (20) afternoon, 2 Gajaba Regiment troops, together with 221 Brigade troops on the directions of Lieutenant Colonel R.M.H Jayatissa, Commanding Officer, 2 Gajaba Regiment, promptly responded to the emergency and went down the precipice quickly while simultaneously alerting fishing boats as well as the Navy troops in the vicinity and the seas.
However, attempts of the troops ended in smoke as both children had by then bled to death after they both had sustained fatal physical injuries after the fall on the boulders, but the 34-year old their mother who had allegedly forced the children to jump off, was rescued and admitted to the Trincomalee hospital.
Police maintain that the incident had sparked off over a dispute in the family, resident in Agbopura, Kantale and investigations have confirmed that three of them had arrived at the temple premises by bus on that fateful day before the tragedy struck.
