Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared open the new Welioya Headquarters of the Civil Defence Force in Galkulama, Welioya yesterday (18th July).
Mr. Rajapaksa unveiled a commemorative plaque there and later opened the shrine room. He planted a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhiya in the premises. Inaugurating a new pre-school built there. Secretary Defence officially registered the first two children symbolizing the start of the childcare facility.
The new facility is established in what was a former fish breeding centre which lay abandoned due to terrorist threat during the terrorist conflict. The site which was in a state of total neglect for a long time was overgrown with shrub jungle and the buildings damaged due to the constant exposure to the elements. Through commitment and hard work, CDF personnel were able to give a new lease of life to this once desolate facility by converting it into their new headquarters.
The Welioya CDF facility includes a parade ground, lecture hall, welfare shop, commanding officer's chalet, shrine room and accommodation facilities for female personnel.
