Sri Lanka’s ‘Victory Day’ (May 18), more popularly dubbed as the second Independence Day of the Nation which brought about durable peace after defeating the 30-year long brutal terrorism, is to be held this year in Matara on a grand scale for the first time.
This milestone ‘Victory Day’ is dedicated to salute Tri-service, Civil Defence Force and Police War Heroes who at the expense of their precious lives, legs and limbs, defended the Nation’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and unitary status, exactly 5 years ago.
A special meeting to this effect, took place Thursday (13) morning at 3 Gemunu Watch (GW) Battalion Headquarters, Matara, co-presided by Hon Minister Dallas Alahapperuma and Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development.
Presidential Advisor on Buddhist Affairs, Ven Getamanne Gunananda Thero, Deputy Minister Sanath Jayasuriya, District Secretary for Matara, Additional Secretary to Ministry of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, Army, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Inspector General of the Police, Director General, Civil Defence Force, Adjutant General of the Army, senior tri-service officers and state officials, participated in the discussion that reviewed arrangements, related to conduct of the parades, gun salute positions, Navy sail pasts, Air Force fly pasts, marches, parachute displays, public utilities, traffic arrangements, etc.
Before the meeting got underway, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff, General Jagath Jayasuriya, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Inspector General of the Police and Director General Civil Defence Force, visited the location at Matara Beach Road where the ceremonies are to be held.
Mr Rajapaksa inspecting the venue, advised Tri-service Chiefs and the IGP to arrange the flow of the entire parade, enabling the public to have a broader exposure to the chain of spectacles. Separate ceremonial, combat and mechanized columns of the armed forces, are expected to salute the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces who graces the occasion as the Chief Guest of the day.
