The newly-appointed, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J), Major General Udaya Perera, the former Kilinochchi Commander (SFHQ-KLN), assumed office on Friday (10). Amid religious rites and rituals, he symbolically signed an official document at the auspicious minute and inaugurated the office.
A Guard Turnout, Guard of Honour plus a Three-planting event signified the occasion. In a brief address to the occasion, Major General Perera assured his best services to the people of Jaffna and paid his gratitude to priests of all denominations for their presence at the occasion.
Major General Udaya Perera, now a senior officer in the Gajaba Regiment joined the Sri Lanka Army Regular Force on 10 October 1981 as an Officer Cadet. Having received basic training at Sri Lanka Military Academy Diyatalawa, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 23 June 1983.
Maj. Gen. Udaya Perera, during his military career spanning over 32 years, has held many a responsible appointments in the Sri Lanka Army. With his knowledge and experience gathered through a number of local and overseas training courses, he succeeded in promoting civil-military relation in Kilinochchi area where he was the Commander SFHQ-KLN prior to this appointment. Major General Udaya Perera succeeds Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe who is to take up as Adjutant General of the Army.
Meanwhile, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, who held the office of the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna for four years, relinquished his duties on Thursday (09) after he took over on 7 January 2010.
Having joined the Army on 19th September 1980 as an officer cadet, he received his basic military training at Officers’ Training Academy in Madras. On completion of his training, he was commissioned to the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Sri Lanka Artillery on 18 July 1981. Earlier, he has served many parts of the country, holding responsible appointments at Army Headquarters and in his own Regiment.
Maj Gen Hathurusinghe adopted his own strategies to promote relations between soldiers and Jaffna denizens. In his endeavour, he received copious support from each and every soldier, irrespective of their ranks. Civil-Military Coordination (CIMIC) centre was a product that helped enhancement of the quality of life of people requiring assistance in Jaffna.
