The prestigious Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) at Sapugaskanda, had its annual graduation ceremony (Course No 7) at DSCSC auditorium this morning (13) where a total of 102 officers, including 13 foreigners, passed out during a glittering convocation ceremony.
Dr P.B Jayasundara, Secretary to Ministry of Finance and Plan Implementation as the Chief Guest, graced the occasion, together with Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development and a host of service commanders, diplomats, senior tri-service officers, past commanders and distinguished invitees, including Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commanders of the Navy and Air Force.
Major General N.J Walgama, Commandant, DSCSC received the Chief Guest and all other distinguished invitees on arrival at the entrance to the auditorium.
The Course No 7 at DSCSC began in January 2013 and this is the 5th consecutive year, in which 13 student officers from friendly foreign countries such as India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Sudan were participating for the year 2013 Course.
This year’s Course participants, as is the practice, proceeded to India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan as part of their familiarization overseas tour in order to gain broader exposure and experience.
At the ceremony, one-minute silence was observed in honour of fallen war heroes before distribution of certificates and awards, got off the ground.
DSCSC Commandant Major General N.J Walgama, presented a copy of the latest 'Owlet', the journal of the DSCSC to the Chief Guest and other distinguished invitees as tokens of memory.
Together with distribution of parchments to the graduates, special awards and certificates were awarded to the high achievers of the Course by the Chief Guest and Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The 'Golden Owl' Award, first in order of merits was awarded to the Army student officer, Major J.A.S Jayasekara for his overall excellent performances.
Major Asuthush Kumar of Indian Army, Lieutenant Commander N Dahanayake of Sri Lanka Navy, Lieutenant Commander Anish Mathew of Indian Navy, Squadron Leader G.G.S.R.G.U Gunawardana of Sri Lanka Air Force and Wing Commander Muninandan Mushlesh of Bangladesh Air Force who shone during the Course, as Best Achievers, carried away the ‘Golden Owl’ award of the College. The ‘Golden Pen’ award for best Commandant’s Research Paper (CRP) was presented to Major K.W.K.A.P. Wanniarachchi.
The present DSCSC, renamed in 2007, came into being as the Army Command and Staff College or the ACSC back in 1997, to match with the rapid expansion of the Armed Forces and face battlefield challenges that were developing at that period of time.
The DSCSC is recognized as one of the best military seats of learning in the South Asian region which provides a joint services environment, in which examinations conducted over 15 continuous hours, have armed those graduates with strategic knowledge, warfare tactics, tolerance, flexibility in mind, resilience, in a battlefield environment, etc before they qualify for the degree, Passed Staff College (psc), affiliated to the Kotalawala Defence University.
The faculty strives to provide an 'on the job' Training Programme with practical assignments. Student Officers from respective services, function under three wings, namely Army, Navy and Air, paying greater emphasis on joint working environment for collective and individual knowledge.
