6 Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment (6 SLLI) Headquarters at Mahakandarawa, Mihintale, Anuradhapura on Saturday (23) opened its new colossal archway, in bringing historical characters to life through mural statues that depict the famous Vijithapura battles, waged between Kings Dutu Gemunu and Elara, the South Indian invader during 161 -162 B.C.
Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest at the invitation of SLLI Colonel of the Regiment and 6 SLLI Commanding Officer, unveiled a plaque and declared opened the new archway, guarded by two symbolic giants (Yodhayas) against infiltration, reminiscent of good olden times of royalties.
This 25 ft high and 175 ft long archway, its walls plastered with those ancient murals to the life, has been constructed with finacial, labour and creative contribution, made by all members of 6 SLLI Battalion Headquarters upon guidance, given by Lieuteant Colonel K.A Pushpa Kumara, Commanding Officer 6 SLLI.
Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, seconds after its formal opening, had a closer look at those meticulously carved murals and statues, enlarged to life-size and shared a couple of views with the troops who executed the project as a conceptual notion, proposed by the Commander of the Army some time ago when he was the Chief of Staff and the former Colonel of the SLLI Regiment.
Later on, the Commander was invited to open the new Corporals' Mess Hall which was a long-felt need at the 6 SLLI Headquarters. After its ceremonial opening, the Commander went round the premises and saw for himself how facilities have been made available to the Other Ranks in the mess hall which has a club for games,etc.
Giving monumental memory to the Commander's visit to the premises, he was invited to plant a mango sapling at the premises before he exited from the venue.
Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W), Major General Boniface Perera, SLLI Colonel of the Regiment, Major General K.A.D.A Karunasekara and a large gathering of senior officers attended the ceremony at Mahakandaraweva.
