No More Restrictions Across Omanthai roadblock

All security arrangements, associated with passage across the famous Omanthai roadblock in Omanthai, North of Vavuniya have been dismantled and dispensed with effective from August 31, 2013, following a decision taken by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development and Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake.

The well-known Omanthai roadblock was established on 22 March 2002 soon after the cease-fire agreement with LTTE terrorists was signed with the objective of transporting essentials for consumption of civilians in the then LTTE-held areas.

The Omanthai roadblock was in the practice of screening all the essentials that were finding their way into LTTE dominated areas at that period of time since some of those items, particularly pen torch batteries, chemical powder, etc were used for production of explosive devices to attack security forces.

Effective from August 31, neither civilians nor vehicles are subjected to any checking as before. A brief ceremony in connection with the dismantling of checking procedures was attended by Major General Boniface Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters-Wanni,   General Officer Commanding, 56 Division and several other senior officers.
