HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday (16) unveiled the pinnacle of the Army-built new Dagoba (pagoda) and the newly-erected archway (Wahalkada) at Sri Sumedharama Budu Raja Temple at Tissapura, Hambantota.
Troops serving under the 12 Division Headquarters in Nagarawewa, Hambantota, conscious of many shortcomings and lack of sacred objects for veneration in the temple offered their labour for construction of a new Dagoba and the archway at the entrance to the temple premises on the directions given by Brigadier D.S.N.K Senadheera, General Officer Commanding, 12 Division. Earlier, the same 12 Division constructed a monastery building (Sanghawasa) that facilitates 30 residential monks and took initiatives in founding a Pirivena education centre at the same venue with the blessings of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development and the Army.
At the request of Ven Panamure Sunanda Thero, Incumbent, Sri Sumedharama Budu Raja Temple, HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Chief Guest attended the opening ceremony, accompanied by Hon Speaker Mr Chamal Rajapaksa and Hon Mr Namal Rajapaksa (MP) as Guests of Honour.
Thalangama South Lion Club, presided by Lion Chandratillake Dissanayake, in response to Brigadier Senadheera’s request, together with his wife, Lion members and other donors, has offered their financial assistance to the project. The construction of the Dagoba, designed by the Army’s Captain Sesath Silva was completed by Engineer Service Regiment troops of the 12 Division without receiving any external assistance.
