Sri Lanka Army’s 55 Division Headquarters under the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) recently resolved a long standing request for return of fishermen’s abandoned boats after their legitimate owners were properly identified.
Of 39 boats that were found abandoned by troops of 19 Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) during humanitarian operations and before them, remained under the care of the troops, 55 Division Headquarters succeeded in tracing 25 owners of those boats after proper scrutiny.
A brief recent ceremony at Kaddaikadu, headed by Brigadier B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division, gave away those 25 boats to the owners, all of them from fisher-folk families.
As an interim relief to needy fishermen in the area, 14 unclaimed boats, remaining were however given to selected families on condition that those boats are returned once legitimate owners are found.
Grama Niladari and villagers were present at the occasion.
