Contributors to the exhibition of arts, ‘Viru Daru Sithuwam’, organized by Defence Service College (DSC) at Malay Street, Colombo 2, received a fillip on Friday (5) when Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence SevaVanitha Unit, accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Rosan Goonathilake, Commander of the Army General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon, arrived there to inaugurate the event and encourage promotion of aesthetic skills of the students learning in this college.
The Chief Guest for the occasion, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, together with Mrs Rajapaksa and the Tri Forces Commanders and Inspector General of Police went round the premises and closely watched the exhibits on display at the exhibition that mirror aesthetic talents of the children of tri-service families.
Adding more significance to the occasion, Mr Rajapaksa later on began to give away 148 scholarships under "Viru Sisu Pradeepa - V" to students who excelled in recent Grade 5 scholarship examination. Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Tri Forces Commanders and Inspector General of Police also were associated with the distribution during the same brief ceremony.
Each scholarship, valued at Rs 25,000/=, deposited in savings books of those recipients, was handed over to 148 War Hero children studying in this college on the occasion. Accordingly, 106 students from Army families, 8 students of Navy families, 9 students of Air Force families and 25 students of the Police families were awarded above-mentioned scholarships during the ceremony. In addition, a large stock of school accessories, books, bags, etc was also distributed among these students, belonging to tri-services and the Police during the same ceremony.
Ministry of Defence and its SevaVanitha Branch have sponsored the award of scholarships and other gifts to the students.
