Keppapilavu Model Village in Mullaittivu, entrusted to 165 families, sheltered earlier in the Manik Farm centre for displaced people in Vavuniya was vested in the public during a grand ceremony on Saturday (15).
HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, accompanied by Ministers, Governors, Commander of the Army and a host of other invitees gave away keys to first 10 house recipients during the brief ceremony. On the same occasion, the President inaugurated the electricity supply system to the village after unveiling a plaque.
Each house, worth about Rs 6 lakhs also received dry ration parcels from the Chief Guest, President Mahinda Rajapaksa soon after the main ceremony.
Sri Lanka Army during the first phase of the housing project constructed 50 new houses, giving free labour to the project. Major General L.B.R Mark, Security Force Commander, Mullaittivu welcomed the President on his arrival at the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT).
Around the same time a pre-school for Mullaittivu kids, built by Hemas Company Ltd was also opened on the same day by the visiting President who later distributed gift parcels among a section of the kids before his exit from the place.
President Rajapaksa took time off to interact with people who had flocked to see him in Mullaittivu and inquired into their well-being.
Meanwhile, the President after ceremonially opening the renovated A9 road and the new Kilinochchi People’s Bank distributed 10 scholarships for students displaced due to violence in the past. Each scholarship is Rs 12,000/= in value.
Major General L.B.R Mark before conclusion of the day’s itinerary, presented two souvenirs to the visiting Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces and the Commander of the Army General Jagath Jayasuriya who made his first public appearance soon after he was promoted to the rank of General.
