More than 445 Army personnel covering 57 schools in Colombo town and its suburbs recently carried out Dengue eradication programmes, hand in hand with more than 265 Police personnel, 253 Colombo Municipal Council employees and 88 Public Health Inspectors.
In keeping with the government’s policy of involving members of the Armed Forces for this task, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya directed Colombo-based 14 Division Headquarters to cooperate with the fight against spread of this deadly disease caused by mosquitoes.
Prior to the launch of the mammoth campaign, a full day survey was conducted around Colombo for mosquito breeding places with the participation of about six personnel, including officers of the Army.
On the day of the campaign, a large gathering of parents, state officials and school students joined hands together with the team of Armed Forces and other personnel. Around the same time, legal action was instituted against residents of 41 houses for breeding of mosquitoes in their compounds.
