Creating a landmark turning point in the medical history of the Army, its Colombo-based prime medical institute, Narahenpita Military Hospital, is set to move into its mammoth new ten-storied complex on next Army Day (Oct 10) as the country’s second largest hospital complex of international standards with 1043 beds.
Equipped with most modern and sophisticated MRI scanners, a roof-top chopper pad, automatic x-ray screening machinery and a host of state-of-the-art technicalities of the best quality, the new Military Hospital complex is to be entirely manned by professionally-trained Army personnel for both administrative and medical duties.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army Friday (7) morning made an unannounced visit to the hospital worksite with a view to inspecting its progress.
The new complex, second only to the Colombo National Hospital in its capacity, is to extend its services to all tri-service personnel as well as to family members of ex-servicemen at the earliest upon its ceremonial opening in October this year.
In the company of several senior officers, the Commander inspected every section of the construction, now fast nearing completion and spoke to a cross-section of engineers, technicians and builders, busy working there in order to receive an update on the progress. At the same time, he directed authorities to commence training of Army technical staff, expected to be deployed for the service of the hospital, from now onwards, enabling them to have a far wide knowledge.
The Commander underlining the importance of proper and sustained maintenance of the new utility complex, instructed those responsible for the overall construction of the complex to adhere to expected deadlines.
The new hospital complex with its diagnostic facilities in radiology as well as in pathology complements more space and better health care since Narahenpita Military Hospital serves as the central wing to all island-wide peripheral Army medical units.
Keen on inspecting the worksite, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, on whose initiatives the project was inaugurated with the blessings of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, toured the length and breadth of the new construction during his stay in the premises.
