Troops Rush to Reconstruct Mallakam Homes, Damaged by Floods &;amp; Cyclone

Groups of soldiers serving the 513 Brigade under the 51 Division at Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J), rose to the occasion and rushed to the assistance of cyclone and flood-affected people in Mallakam and Gonapuram villages in the Tellippalai Divisional Secretariat area on Monday (13).

Torrential rains and inclement weather plus cyclonic winds that affected those areas have completely destroyed more than 15 houses and rendered over 74 people homeless, compelling them to move out of their houses.

Three youngsters, Sukirasa Sugandha (17), Subarasa Sugandan (14) and Subarasan Sajiwan (19) sustained injuries on Monday (13) when palmyrah trees fell on their houses, were admitted to Jaffna and Thelippalai hospitals with the assistance of the troops of 14 Gemunu Watch.

At present, troops are engaged in reconstructing 4 completely destroyed and 11 partly damaged houses of those civilians with the support received from others.

Mr K Sri Mohanan, Divisional Secretary for Thelippalai has provided 50 corrugated tin sheets for Army renovation work. Similarly, the EPDP Organization has made 15 temporary canopies available to the Army for temporary housing in case of emergency.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, 14 Gemunu Watch troops have been providing cooked meal packets and medicine to the victims during the past two days on the instructions of 513 Brigade Commander.

Troops expect to complete the repairs to these houses within a day or two.
