Sri Lanka Army Small Bore Rifle Team (men & women), creating a record after absence of five years, won the National Small Bore Rifle Championship-2012 on Thursday (27) during the finals at Welisara Navy Range.
Staff Sergeant S.M.M Samarakoon of Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) carried away men’s individual championship in rifle events while Private W.G.J Madushani of 1 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) won the women’s individual championship during the tournament that began a few weeks ago and ended on Thursday (27) with final encounters.
Sri Lanka Army established this one and only championship record, breaking the old record of 3 x 40 rifle (3 position) with a score of 3347/3600 in men’s team.
Thursday’s championship qualifies for a selection trial in the South Asian Games - 2013 having produced 16 pools contenders for the national team.
The Army team is coached by Brigadier K.W. Edema, Director Supplies and Transport, together with Warrant Officer I Pushpamali Ramanayake and Warrant Officer I N.P Gunadasa of the Army.
The award ceremony on Thursday evening at Welisara Navy Range received Hon Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Minister of Sports as the Chief Guest. Mr Anura Jayawickrema, Secretary to Ministry of Sports and Mrs Ranjani Jayakody, Directress General of Sports attended the event as guests of honour.
