Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya after his interaction with the Sri Lankan troops serving the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti flew to Lebanon on Sunday (25) in order to meet the 150-strong contingent of Sri Lankan troops, deployed for force protection duties at United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya was the first Sri Lankan Commander of the Army to have visited both UN serving Sri Lankan contingents in Haiti and Lebanon.
The Sri Lankan Force Protection Company (SLFP-Coy) serving the UNIFIL is composed of 10 officers and 140 Other Ranks and deployed mostly for force protection duties at UNIFIL Headquarters at NAQOURA, South Lebanon. This was the second Sri Lankan contingent after the first Sri Lankan contingent to serve the UNIFIL was dispatched there on 24 December 2004.
The Commander upon arrival in Lebanon was warmly received jointly by the contingent Commander of the SLFP-Coy, Protocol Officer of the UNIFIL and a senior officer from Lebanon Army and conducted to attend a formal courtesy call, extended by Mr Ranjith Gunaratne, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon at his office in Beirut.
Minutes after, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya at the entrance to the Sri Lankan contingent premises, more popularly called as SRI base was accorded a Guard Turnout by troops of the SLFP-Coy serving the UNIFIL in keeping with military traditions and ushered to receive a comprehensive presentation of the UNIFIL deployments and operational duties from the SLFP-Coy Commander.
As per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UNIFIL, each Sri Lankan contingent is mandated to serve a period of six months. The SLFP-Coy currently serving the UNIFIL includes troops from almost all the Regiments of Sri Lanka Army, majority being from SLAC, MIR, and Infantry and carries out escort duties, VIP protection and orderly duties, Explosives’ defection duties, accord of salute to visiting military delegations, Command Posts’ protection, etc.
