Army Coordinates Distribution of Fishing Boats &;amp; Nets

The new community centre at Kallapadu fisheries harbour, built by Canadian development aid agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries was recently opened during a brief ceremony.

Ministry of Fisheries under directions of Dr Rajitha Senaratna, Minister of Fisheries and Development of Aquatic Resources carried out a series of fishing community-oriented welfare projects in Silawathura, Kallapadu North, Mahakudailappu and surrounding areas on the same day with the intention of promoting their livelihoods.

Under this programme, twenty-one fishing boats and boat engines and fishing nets were also distributed among the fishing folk in above areas.

On the instructions of the District Secretary for Mullaitivu Mr P. Pathinadan, Security Forces Headquarters, Mullaitivu, commanded by Major General L.B.R. Mark coordinated the series of those projects in respective areas.

High Commissioner for Canada, Mr Bruce Levy, Patrick Evans of the UN, Project Manager, Simon D.C., Nihal Hettiarachchi, Director, Ministry of Fisheries, P. Pathinatan, District Secretary for Mullaittivu, Rev. Ven Javez (Caritas), Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Mullaitivu, Major General L.B.R. Mark, General Officer Commanding 59 Division, Brigadier A.W.M.A.W.N. Ranawana, Brigade Commander, 591 Brigade, Brigadier S.K.G.N.B. Ehelamalpe and a large gathering of civilians in those areas attended those ceremonies.
