The first-ever cricket meet of the youngsters, ' Young Cougars Cricket Fiesta 201V organized by the newly established 4 Young Cougars Club' of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) recently got underway at the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment grounds at Ambepussa.
Sixteen teams Under 13 and Above 13 categories including teams from Sri Jinananda Orphanage vied for championship during separate encounters that continued throughout the day amidst sounds of revelry and fun. After closely contested matches, the cricketers of 'Junior Gunners' and Sri Jinananda Orphanage 'A' Team clinched the Co-Championship under both age categories.
Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) attended the opening ceremony of the matches as the Chief Guest. The national cricketer, Nuwan Kulasekara who has also been invited to the occasion as the Guest of Honour by Mrs Rani Jayatillake, Chairperson, SLSR Seva Vanitha Unit witnessed the young men at play.
Ajith Kumara of Sri Jinananda Orphanage Team 'A' (Above 13) was adjudged the Best Bowler. The trophies for both Best Batsman and Player of the Series went to Suranjith Pushpakumara of Sri Jinananda Orphanage Team 'A' (Above 13).
This novel cricket encounter organized for the first time among young cricketers of all Army families drew a large gathering of senior officers, cricket fans and other well-wishers, including Colonel of the SLSR Regiment and Colonel Commandants of all respective regiments. Trophies to the winners were given away by Major General D.R.A.B. Jayatillake, Colonel of the Regiment, Major General J.C. Rambukpotha, Colonel of the Artillery Regiment and Major General E.P. de Z. Abeysekara, Colonel of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps.
Junior Gunners Club, Signal Juniors Club, Young Cougars Club (A & B Teams), Gemunu Highlanders Juniors Club, Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps Children's Society and Teams 'A' and 'B' from Sri Jinananda Orphanage contributed to the Championship series.
