The Army, geared to go hand in hand with the fast developing technological innovations worldwide established its own Voice/Data Network covering more than thirty Directorates and Branches at the Army Headquarters, six Security Forces Headquarters, fourteen Divisions/Task Forces and twenty-two Regimental Headquarters, to start with.

This Voice/Data Communication Network, a visionary concept, mooted by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, is to cover island-wide all Army formations within a few weeks. Commander of the Army Monday (5) morning graced the inaugural launch of the new Voice/Data Communication Network during a brief ceremony at the Army Headquarters.

As warfare is moving fast towards the indispensable paradigm of information sharing, situational updates, exchange of intelligence, the Army’s former Chief Signal Officer  Major General S.A.P.P. Samarasinghe, fully assisted by Brigadier K.R.P. Rowel, then Commander of Signal Brigade, Directorate of Information and Technology and Centre for Research and Development implemented the project to keep pace with new technological advancements as networking governs speed, accuracy, saving of time, cost and labour while commanders at all levels are provided with better data for correct assessments and formalities, voice and video feeds as strategic inputs and security requirements.

Major General Samarasinghe in his comprehensive presentation at the inauguration tabled the multitude of facilities like live-meetings, audio and video conferencing, online file transferring, online file sharing, intranet Emailing, Internet, being provided to the user though this networking.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army on Monday (5) at Army Headquarters saw for himself how this new data network operates within the organization during detailed demonstrations, presented separately by officers of Sri Lanka Signal Corps. The official commissioning of the network took place simultaneously in the presence of all principal staff officers and senior officers.

The Commander on whose proposal this first-ever networking in the Army was taking place formally inaugurated it and made a brief address to the gathering.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya noted that this type of networking is expected to accelerate administrative machinery and enable the whole Army to reach result-oriented assignments on day-to-day basis within a short span of time unlike in the past. The Commander, who eagerly watched its workings throughout, inquiring into various aspects asked all in the Army to gradually switch to the new system to make the Army a vibrant administrative hub.

The whole Army is to be completely networked shortly, enabling it to carry out all its day to-day administrative work in a more fast and efficient manner, thereby minimizing time, cost and labour.

By introducing latest versions of the technology in order to make it one of the most secured networks in the country, networking is expected to help the Army to run smoothly in meeting with various challenges that may come up with the advancement of modern technology.

The new networking saves a considerable amount of resources in the sphere of transport, etc.
