The Sri Lanka Army, following on its success in defeating terrorism and establishing peace in our motherland, which in turn provided greater degree of freedom and quality socializing possibilities, is settling back in reviving military customs and traditions after a lapse of many years. The purpose of this revival has been to instill such customs and traditions among the current generation of servicemen and enhance their quality of socializing as the entire country is now set to enjoy the fruits of newly secured liberation, coupled with the fast developing infrastructure and island-wide revival in economic, social and cultural spheres.
The Army has inherited a cauldron of those ceremonial and traditional practices from our colonial masters since its inception in 1949. Ceremonial parades, award nights, mess nights, dinner dances, etc were some of those practices that emerged from the tradition of upholding etiquette and socializing. Most of these were done away with during the recent past due to the circumstances that prevailed.
The annual Army ‘Dinner Dance’ in particular was one of the most looked forward to in the social calendar. It was open to all members of society and fostered fellowship, recreation and entertainment. This event which was abandoned in 1982 will be revived in 2011 after a lapse of many years. It will coincide with the 62nd Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army and will be a main feature among the events, lined up to commemorate the occasion.
Army Dance 2011, though revamped after a lapse of many years as the final leg of this year's Army anniversary celebrations, is to be restricted to a maximum of about 750 couples due to space constraints. Tickets priced at Rs 7500/- per couple will be available on a first come first served basis.
The event is organized by a committee, headed by Maj Gen E P de Z Abeysekera and it includes Maj Gen M P Peiris, Brig G R H Dias, Brig K P A Jayasekera, Brig I P Ranasinghe, Brig P R Wanigasooriya, Col P T M de Silva, Col I O W Madola and Lt Col N H Malsinghe. The committee is doing its utmost to make the event a memorable one.
