Island-wide Army formations, sharing their religious sentiments with the rest of the country, conducted a series of Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Vesak celebrations with the participation of troops and the general public.
Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna on the instructions of its Commander, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, organized a mammoth Sil campaign with attendance of over 1400 Army personnel serving the peninsula. Among other highlights of the event included offer of alms to Maha Sangha and Sil observers, placement of Buddha statues around the sacred Bo maluwa at the Headquarters premises, conduct of Dhamma sermons, etc.
Meanwhile, the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni on the directions given by its Commander Major General A.K.S Perera had a full-day Vesak programme on Vesak Full Moon Poya day (17). The day’s programme was comprised of display of Vesak lanterns and decorations, recital of devotional songs, offer of food (Dansel) to the visitors, etc.
Recital of Buddhist devotional songs, both in Tamil and Sinhala languages was performed by a group of former LTTE combatants, under rehabilitation at Vavuniya Rehabilitation Centre. This special feature attracted the attention of all those who were present to witness the spectacle.
Tri-service and Police personnel joined together to produce a large number of Vesak lanterns in Vavuniya. Many hundreds of Tamil and Sinhala people flocked to the area to attend the celebrations.
In the meantime, troops serving Madhu road area had their Sil campaign at Sri Bodhirajarama temple on the instructions of 54 Division Commander Brigadier M.A.M Dias under the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni. The programme was supported by Australia based Veera Prakramabahu foundation and the SAME organization. Seven Buddhist monks participated in the programme on Vesak Full Moon Poya day.
Similarly, 57, 65, 66 Divisions and 3 Task Force Headquarters under Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi conducted a series of Vesak commemorative ceremonies on Vesak day (17). Major General Nandana Udawatta, Commander Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi has given directions for these arrangements.
Display of Vesak lanterns and conduct of Buddha Pooja were held on the banks of the famous Iranamadu tank, close to the location where the Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi has been established.
The main attraction, recital of Bhakthi Gee and conduct of Dansel at Kilinochchiya public grounds, drew a huge crowd of civilians in the area in addition to members of the Security Forces and the Police.
In the meantime, Vesak arrangements of the 66 Division took place at Pooneryn Public Grounds on Vesak day. A Buddha Pooja Perahera (procession) with the participation of rehabilitated former LTTE cadres in the area was the centre of attraction.
Meanwhile, Area Headquarters Anuradhapura under Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni, has organized a decorated touring float with Bhakthi Gee singing soldiers in and around Anuradhapura.
On the instructions of Colonel W.A Ariyaratne, Area Commander, Anuradhapura troops serving the area lit up late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa round about in the town centre as a mark of respect to him on Vesak full moon day.
The touring float will continue to tour city suburbs until Saturday (21).
