The Army has once again received laurels for its recent exemplary role and commitment during the floods in Anuradhapura which in turn avoided a major catastrophe in the area.
The Office of the Regional Director of Irrigation, Anuradhapura, in a letter addressed to Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, has appreciated the dedicated service of the Army when several major tanks and tank bunds in Anuradhapura districts were threatened with imminent breach and extensive flooding in February, this year.
‘The staff of the Department of Irrigation, striving to bring the situation under control, sought the assistance of the Anuradhapura Army Area Headquarters which was made immediately available to us. Had it not been their dedication at the highest level, severe loss of human lives, property and cultivation were imminent. All the officers and other Army personnel who responded to the situation worked with utmost dedication in company with our staff, strengthening and restoring tank bunds and attending to all other preventive and protective measures. Let us express our profound appreciation and gratitude to the Sri Lanka Army and all its officers and soldiers who participated in making the above operation a success,’ the letter of appreciation signed jointly by Mr. W.D Palugaswewa, Regional Director of Irrigation, Anuradhapura and Mr. Jayantha De Silva, Chief Irrigation Engineer, Anuradhapura further stated.
Army troops, responding to the SOS call immediately rushed to specific flood-affected areas in the District and helped evacuation of marooned civilians, using Army boats while another section of the troops simultaneously, attended to the fortification of existing tank bunds, threatened with imminent breach or overflowing due to torrential rains in the first week of February.
