Commander Carries New Year Greetings to Troops Serving in North and Wanni

On the eve of the national Sinhala and Hindu New Year Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, the Commander of the Army on Sunday (10) carried his new year greetings and best wishes to all the ranks serving the North as has been the practice of the Army Chief since he assumed the office.

On Friday (8) the Commander commenced his New Year itinerary after visiting Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi (SFHQ - KLN) and Security Forces Headquarters, Mulaithivu (SFHQ - MLT) and inaugurated a new IT Centre and met a cross section of the soldiers where he shared a couple of thoughts with them.

He also spoke to them, reminding them of the future roles of the Army.

On Sunday (10) morning, the Commander took his New Year greetings to the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ - W) where he commanded during the Wanni humanitarian operations that resulted in the victory over 30 year-long terrorism. Major General A.K. Sumedha Perera, Commander SFHQ - W received the visiting Army Chief along with other senior officers serving the SFHQ - W. A customary Guard of Honour presented by the SFHQ -W troops saluted him at the entrance to the SFHQ - W complex.

Addressing the troops in his former theatre of military command a few years back, the Commander said that each soldier is to be given professional military training as well as the knowledge required for them to pursue another alternative career after leaving the military service some day.

In line with the national policy of the government, permanent military camps are to be established covering the entire country and replace the existing temporary camps. For this purpose, 984 prefabricated buildings provided by the government have been used and 1542 more of those buildings are to be completed soon and ready for use, the Commander added.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, who took a personal interest in the ongoing construction project of the new operating theatre at Wanni Military Hospital made inquiries and instructed those responsible to expedite its construction work.

During his visit, he distributed gift parcels among the inmates at the Wanni Military Hospital and inquired into well-being of the patients.  Before he left the SFHQ -W, the Commander met a cross section of the soldiers and shared refreshments with them over exchange of a few thoughts.

His next stop was Jaffna. On arrival at the Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ - J), he was warmly received by Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander SFHQ - J. Later on, he visited 52 and 55 divisions and met all General Officers Commanding serving the SFHQ - J. Lieutenant General Jayasuriya on receipt of an update regarding government’s ongoing development roles inquired into the progress of demining and resettlements of IDPs in respective areas.

In his brief address to the soldiers, the Commander noted that the Army with the intention of improving IT knowledge among soldiers, steps have been taken to establish 05 IT Centres by now. The most recent opening took place in Kilinochchi two days ago, he said.

‘Networking of the entire Army is fast in progress and this will enable a tremendous efficiency of the administration,’ the Commander said.

The Commander pointed out that large sums of money spent on arms and ammunition have been saved and such savings could now be used for the betterment of the soldiers. He also added that the Army expects to save a considerable amount of its expenditure being incurred on hiring vehicles for use in the Army after replacing them with a fleet of vehicles the Army is going to import from India in the near future. Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, prior to his departure from Jaffna, shared a cup of tea with a cross section of the soldiers serving the SFHQ - J.
