The Area Headquarters, Kandy has been re-named as the 111 Brigade Headquarters, Kandy with effect from 30th January 2011.
The previous Area Headquarters was first founded on 10th January 1972 as the Central Commander’s Headquarters considering security developments in the Central hills at that point of time. It was initially commanded by Colonel E.J Divitotawela.
On 2nd August 1988, it was renamed as the 12 Division. With the passage of time, it was named as 32 Division again until it became to be known as the Area Headquarters on 23rd October 1996.
Accordingly, beginning 30th January, this year the 111 Brigade Headquarters, Kandy under 11 Division will continue to serve the area. 38 Commanders/Division Commanders have so far served the Kandy Headquarters. Brigadier W.G.H.A.S Bandara is the incumbent Commander in the renamed 111 Brigade Headquarters.
