A group of 11 farmers, selected from remote agricultural areas in Jaffna were facilitated by the Army to follow a one-month long in residence training course on ‘Dairy Management’, conducted by Seeppukulama Agriculture Training Centre in Anuradhapura.
The opportunity was organized by Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna, commanded by Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, following instructions given to him for creation of such opportunities by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army as a means to promote livelihood of Jaffna civilians.
It was the first opportunity of this kind for them away from Jaffna, though many such openings were earlier available to them before LTTE terrorism took root in the peninsula.
Jaffna-based Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office after identifying this requirement among dairy farmers took it up with the Department of Animal Husbandry with the intention of helping the revival of dairy farming in the peninsula.
On their return to Jaffna Thursday (16) after completion of the course, those 11 farmers including one female directly reached the Jaffna Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office and expressed their gratitude to the Army for making such a rare opportunity available to them for enhancement of their knowledge.
They had reportedly told the Army that they were able to share their know-how with 27 more Sinhalese farmers who followed the same course at Anuradhapura.
Sri Lanka Army during their stay in Anuradhapura made arrangements for them to receive free food and accommodation in addition to the transport provided by the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J).
Four soldiers serving the SFHQ-J also followed the same course with other participants.
