One more Psycho-social Development Centre, “Mahilchi Illam” (Happiness Centre) in the North was recently established at Kilinochchi Maha Vidyalaya, aimed at reaching out to children, traumatized by the series of bitter experiences in the recent war for peace.
This new special centre, supported by a group of UK based volunteers, headed by Mrs Manori Unambuwe who coordinated the project, is to serve as a recreation centre where school children could bring out their hidden creativity on their own and get over their traumatic experiences with the support received from the Army. Army troops provided skilled labour to get this place organized in the school premises and help conduct the centre with the support of the school principal. Special counseling sessions are also to be provided to the project, depending on requirements.
Major General Chandana Rajaguru, Commander, Security Forces Kilinochchi attended the inaugural function as Chief Guest. Mrs Unambuwe, officials from Ministry of Health and Ministry of Resettlement and Rehabilitation graced the opening occasion as special invitees.
The psychosocial centre is equipped with material for arts and crafts, a library, musical instruments, educational toys, sports equipment, etc., which will provide the children with an opportunity to explore their creative talents, play and have fun, bringing back their lost childhood and overcome past bitter experiences.
The project was sponsored by Sri Lanka Army as a part of their “Winning the Hearts & Minds” campaign in the North.
A similar center, as the second of its kind was opened at Pandiyankulam Maha Vidyalaya, Nadankandal in Manthe East in May this year, following an initiative taken by the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni.
