A WAR HERO who had donated both his arms and one eye while fighting against separatist terrorists was twice fortunate to receive support for his medical requirements, in addition to receipt of a loan from the Pan Asia Bank, under a welfare programme launched by the PM’s office.
Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) during a recent ceremony to hand over loan allocations to disable soldiers at the Pan Asia Bank premises, has unexpectedly met Private Mahinda Edirisuriya of the Army who had lost both arms and one eye during offensives against terrorists. It was revealed that his remaining eye was also affected and fast losing eye sight unless medical therapy that involves a heavy cost is urgently administered.
His medical expenses covering surgery has been estimated at Rs 300,000/= and the War Hero has found it extremely difficult to bear the entire cost of the medication and the surgery. Mrs Jayasuriya afterwards took up the matter with staff members at SVAB office and explored possibilities of helping him. Finally, she was able to collect a sum of Rs 100,000 from his friends and well-wishers. Mr Mayura Wasantha and his associates took the initiative for collection of the donation.
The sum of money thus collected was handed over to the disable War Hero on Wednesday (30) by Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya after inviting the beneficiary to the SVAB auditorium.
