JAFFNA-based Tamil students and teachers, creating a historic gesture of reconciliation and goodwill in the company of Army soldiers, added colour and exceptional significance to the Vesak spirits on Saturday (5) when they jointly sang Vesak devotional songs at Gangaramaya, Hunupitiya in Tamil and Sinhala languages.
This follow-up devotional song recital, originally staged at Jaffna Doraiappa Stadium on account of ‘Yapa Patunai Daham Amavai’, Vesak commemoration week in Jaffna that took place after an absence of 30 years, was organized by Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna at the invitation of the organizing committee. He was also instrumental in organizing the mammoth Vesak arrangements in the Jaffna peninsula in order to strengthen bonds of understanding and brotherhood.
This rare spectacle of ethnic importance drew enthusiasm and curiosity in Colombo as Tamil devotional songs began reverberating Colombo air as Tamil students and teachers, dressed in their traditional attire lent their voice to soothing melodies.
The tour to Colombo organized by the Army offered a rare chance to northerners to see Colombo and its suburbs for themselves as the event coincided with the Vesak week and the Indian film festival.
Mr Hudson Samarasinghe, Chairman Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna along with distinguished guests attended the occasion at Gangaramaya.
Rupavahini and Eye channels of Sri Lanka Ruphavahini Corporation telecast the rare show in Colombo, the same evening (5).
