COMMANDER of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya extending his New Year greetings to troops based in the North and East inducted a programme to dispatch stocks of New Year sweetmeats during a symbolic gesture held at Army Headquarters premises this morning (10).
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, pioneer of the project, the first in Army history handed over parcels containing those sweetmeats to representatives of island-wide Security Forces Headquarters in Jaffna, East, Kilinochchi, Mullaittivu and various other remote installations in the Army, as a part of the symbolic inauguration.
The sweetmeats comprise traditional Kevum, Kokis, Athirasa, Aggala, Dodol and the such, which are associated with the New Year.
This year’s New Year celebration for the Army comes, almost after 3 decades of war and particularly after elimination of LTTE terrorism. These delicacies add special significance and value to the occasion.
These delicacies are to be distributed among soldiers in respective areas during the New Year celebrations.
