BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER in Sri Lanka Dr Peter Hayes and Norwegian Ambassador in Sri Lanka Tore Hattrom, accompanied by Dominic Williams, Second Secretary to the British High Commission and G. Z Meenilankco, Advisor to Royal Norwegian Embassy arrived in Jaffna on a three-day fact-finding visit last Sunday (6).
They met Commander Security Forces, Jaffna Major General L.B.R Mark at the Security Forces Headquarters. During this meeting, Jaffna Commander briefed them on current security developments and contribution of security forces to prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the area. He also elaborated on many measures that have been taken to provide security for the people in the peninsula. Giving an account on humanitarian assignments and civil coordinating work being conducted by the Army, Major General Mark pointed out to the delegates how the civil society cooperated with security authorities.
The delegation appreciated the activities of the Army and at the end of the discussion they left their signatures in the SFHQ – J. visitors book and thanked the Army authorities.
Afterwards they also had a separate meeting with Commander Northern Naval Area Rear Admiral J.S.K Kolambage in Kankeasanturai and undertook an observation tour to the Delft Island. They were also scheduled to meet ICRC and UNHCR representatives in Jaffna, members of People’s Council for Peace and Goodwill, representatives of Jaffna Human Rights Office. and visit IDP camps. They were also to have an audience with Jaffna Bishop Rt Rev Thomas Saundaranayagam, Heads of Jaffna University, Governor for Northern Province Major General (Retd) G. A Chandrasiri and District Secretary for Jaffna Mr K Ganesh during the rest of their itinerary.
