A DELEGATION, led by Robert O. Blake, Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia of the US State Department visited Wanni and met a cross-section of IDPs last weekend.
Mr Blake and the delegation were received in Wanni by Commander Security Forces, Wanni Major General Kamal Gunaratne. Later the Wanni Commander briefed the delegation on the infrastructure and other facilities, being provided by the government to the Welfare villages. The delegation afterwards went to see the Manik Farm Welfare Village.
During their visit Mr Blake talked to the inmates in the Welfare village and inspected the role of the government hospital inside the IDP village and exchanged views with the staff. The visiting US envoy expressed satisfaction over the facilities provided to the IDPs and announced that he would advise the international community accordingly.
The delegation also visited Mannar to observe the resettlement programme in the area and talked to the students at Karunkandal Maha Vidyalaya, Mannar. The visiting US delegation took time off to observe an ongoing Army De-mining worksite in the Mannar district.
