First Lady Declares Open Army Tattoo

CHIEF GUEST for Wednesday’s (21) opening of the Army Tattoo at Kettarama Stadium, now underway for its fifth-day was the First Lady Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapakse.

Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka, Mrs. Anoma Fonseka, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya received the Chief Guest on arrival at the main gate and conducted her for official inauguration. Mrs. Jayasuriya welcomed the visiting First Lady offering her a bouquet of flowers.

Amidst rhythms of auspicious drums, Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa hoisted the National Flag while both Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Commander of the Army raised the flag of the Office CDS and the flag of Sri Lanka Army respectively, to symbolically herald the opening of the day’s proceedings.

The fifth-day saw Army parachutists doing their stunts from the skies and thrilling the spectators as the weather remained bright. The fire drills and women’s display, coupled with a series of undisputed skills of Army personnel added colour to the occasion as the crowds burst into thundering applause.

The Army Tattoo, the final phase of the Army 60th Anniversary started on Saturday (17) and has been a crowd-puller in the past several days.
