Troops Enable Civilians in Jaffna to Get Spectacles

Recently, 52 Division troops of the Army, stationed in Varani, Jaffna conducted a few community-based social service projects by way of providing spectacles to the needy and educational accessories to school children in Vadamarachchi and Thenmarachchi areas.

The project was supported by both Wickramarachchi Opticians and the Development Lottery Board, Colombo. At the beginning, school items and spectacles to the value of about Rs. 250,000/- were distributed among the civilians during arrangements Varani Maha Vidyalaya on Saturday (23).
 
Opticians at the Wickramaarachchi Opticians, Colombo examined more than one thousand sight impaired civilians and recommended use of glasses for sight. With the support of the Development Lottery Board 903 pairs of spectacles were donated to them accordingly. Many others were referred to eye clinics at respective hospitals for further treatment. Members of the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps also assisted the opticians to examine the eyesight of the civilians attending the clinic.

Meanwhile, a stock of caps and parcels of school items, donated by the Development Lottery were also distributed among 100 students of various other schools in the area at the same time.

General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasiinghe, Chairman, Development Lottery Mr. I.R.W. Dissanayake, Working Director Mr. Pradeep Wijesiriwardane, Deputy General Manager Mr. Anura Jayaratne, Proprietor, ‘Wickramarachchi Opticians’ Company Ltd Mr. Mihira Wickramarachchi and several senior Army officers witnessed those community assistance projects.
