Electricity for Entire Jaffna

POWER and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne and Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP made an inspection tour to Jaffna on June 19 to ascertain the 36 Megawatt new power house constructed at Chunnakam to provide electricity to the entire people in the Jaffna peninsula.

With the restoration of civil administration in the Jaffna peninsula, the Government launched a series of development programs to repair and develop power transmission lines, new transformers and sub depots which would ensure 24 hour power supply to the people in Jaffna.

This included the newly constructed power house at Chunnakam. The Minister held a discussion with senior CEB officials who included Deputy General Manager in Charge of Northern Province R. Muthurathnanathan and instructed them to take immediate steps to provide electricity to the people under a 180 day program which runs parallel to the Uthuru Vasanthaya program.

The Minister also advised them to initiate rural electrification programs immediately under the proposed Asian Development Bank and Sida Aid Program.

Under these aid programs, the Asian Development Bank alone has provided US $ 164 million while JAICA has granted the 3,600 million.

These funds will be utilised to install power transmission networks covering Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya and repairs by power transmission network in Jaffna. (Courtesy: Daily News)
