JAPANESE special envoy Yasushi Akashi visited Settikulam Manik Farm Relief Village recently in order to see for himself how the work in IDP centers was proceeding.
Major General G.A Chandrasiri Competent Authority for IDPs for Northern Province briefed the envoy on various welfare measures, being adopted in all welfare centers.
Later, Mrs. P.S.M Charles, District Secretary for Vavuniya explained how the welfare mechanism in place works in coordination with all state agencies for provision of dry rations, medical facilities, cooked food, etc with special focus on children and elderly persons. She also underlined the implementation of the resettlement programme, in place as more and more renovated houses were expected to come up within the government’s 180 day resettlements programme.
Mr. Akashi afterwards visited the water supply scheme in Zone-V near Malwathuoya and saw for himself how the water was distributed.
Minister Rishard Badurdeen and several other senior government officials also accompanied him to the site. Mr. Akashi’s delegation included Kunio Takahasi, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, Yusuke Shindo, Director, Southwest Asia Division, M/FA-Japan, Kiichiro Lwase, Official, Southwest Asia Division, M/FA, Japan and Hideaki Hatanaka, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan.
