Commander Opens Two New Wings in Kataragama

HOLIDAY facilities for Officers and Other Ranks in the Army received a boost when the Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka on Saturday (6) morning declared open the new two-storied building complex for Army holiday-makers.

The new complex consists of a fifteen-room building, meant for officers and another twelve-room one for other ranks. In the holiday calendar of the Army soldiers, Katharagama Pilgrims’ Rest is relatively popular and generally attracts many visitors at weekends.

Both buildings cost the Army about Rs 25 m and most of the work have been carried out by the Engineers Regiment soldiers. Deputy Chief of Staff Major General Upul Perera, Director General Engineering Services Major General Wasantha Kumara, Colonel D.R Mayadunne, Director Army Welfare, Area Commander for Kataragama Colonel Harendra Perera and a few more senior officers welcomed the Commander and invited him to ceremonially open the constructions.

General Fonseka afterwards  unveiled plaques, plastered as tokens of memory on both buildings and cut a ribbon before he inspected the new facilities inside, in the company of senior officers attending the occasion. Commander of the Army closely supervised sanitary and other facilities in the new wings.

Those rooms are given away to Army personnel on concessionary rates and over twenty five thousand Army personnel make use of them on an annual basis.
