Wanni Commander Reviews Updates in Cleared Areas

AS completion of the Wanni rescue operation for forcibly-detained civilians was fast gathering momentum each day, Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander, Security Forces, Wanni Wednesday (6) morning received an on-the-spot update after visiting cleared areas in Ampalavanpokkanai, Putumattalan, Valayanmadam and Puthukudiyirippu.

The visiting Wanni Army chief spoke to Major General Kamal Gunerathne, General Officer Commanding (GOC) for 53 Division & Brigadier Shavindra Silva, GOC for 58 Division and senior officers before commencement of his tour to those newly cleared locations close to the Nandikandal lagoon. Ground commanders with the help of satellite maps and other technical devices briefed Major General Jayasuriya on the status quo, and explained him how remaining terrorists, digging up more and more earth bunds were trying their best to prevent the exit of trapped civilians from the land patch.

Major General Jayasuriya, accompanied by senior officers went to own defences and closer to the ones, held by terrorists. He exchanged a few thoughts with serving troops at those strategic points. He also during his tour in Rettavaikkal area inspected the huge LTTE metal structure, suspected to be a device that could have been used underwater by terrorists for escape or hiding.

Major General Jayasuriya afterwards reviewed IDP reception procedures in place at two major points in the 53 & 58 Divisions and gave further instructions to responsible officers on different logistics.
