Army Chief Applauds Athletes for Their Achievements at 26th Asian Athletics Championship

Athletes who represented the country at the 26th Asian Athletics Championship in Gumi, South Korea, and delivered outstanding performances were commended by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, at the Army Headquarters on 09 June 2025.

The Sri Lanka Army athletics team, comprising five female and six male athletes, was recognised for their commendable achievements. Among the achievers were Staff Sergeant R. Nadeesha of 2 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) and Private M.H.J. Uththara of 2 (V) Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, who secured bronze medals in the Women’s 4x400m Relay. Lance Corporal W.A.M.R. Wijesooriya of 2 (V) SLAWC set a new national record while finishing 6th in the 10,000m event. Warrant Officer II H.K.K. Kumarage of 2 (V) Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers further brought honour to the Army by winning two bronze medals, one in the 400m and another in the 4x400m mixed relay.

Commending the athletes for their dedication, discipline, and exemplary representation of the nation, the Army Chief expressed his deep appreciation for their efforts.

In recognition of their remarkable accomplishments, the Commander of the Army presented the athletes with special mementoes and financial incentives, encouraging them to continue striving for excellence on the global stage. He also extended his best wishes for their future competitions.

Brigadier K.A.D.C.R. Kannangara RSP ndc, Director of Sports of the Sri Lanka Army, was also present at the event.
