A swift and courageous rescue operation carried out by troops of the 3rd Battalion Gemunu Watch and (3 GW) saved life of a student who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Nilwala River near the Mahanama Bridge in Matara.
The incident occurred on the morning of 19th May 2025, when alert troops responded without hesitation upon receiving information about a person in distress in the river. Utilizing a boat, the team successfully reached and rescued the individual from the fast-flowing waters.
The rescue team comprised two Officers and five Other Ranks, who worked with precision and urgency to prevent a potential tragedy. The rescued student was immediately provided with necessary assistance and subsequently handed over to the Matara Police for further action.
The 3 GW troops have once again demonstrated their readiness and compassion, reinforcing their vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
