Chief of Staff Inaugurates Illuminations at Army Headquarters' Vesak Zone

Major General M.G.W.W.W.M.C.B Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, together with Mrs. Priyanga Wickramasinghe, ceremonially inaugurated the Army Headquarters Vesak Zone on the evening of Monday (12 May), representing the Commander of the Army who is currently On an official overseas visit.

Upon arrival, the Chief of Staff was warmly received by Major General D.K.S.K Dolage USP nps psc, Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, who then invited him to initiate the Vesak Zone illuminations. The beautifully decorated Vesak Zone extends across the Army Headquarters premises, offering a captivating visual experience to all visitors.

This year’s Vesak Zone features an impressive display of 22 large lanterns representing various branches and directorates of the Army Headquarters. In addition, over 450 traditional octagonal Vesak lanterns and 28 lotus-shaped lanterns illuminate the premises.

Adding further significance, the Army Seva Vanitha Unit organised a 'Kadala Dansala' (free distribution of chickpeas).

Following the formal inauguration, the Chief of Staff toured the entire Vesak Zone, commending the creativity, dedication and craftsmanship of the troops involved in the decorations. The evening culminated with a performance of Buddhist devotional songs (Bhakthi Gee) by the Directorate of Army Band & Performing Arts, held in front of the Army Headquarters.

In parallel, the Sri Lanka Army has also contributed to standardising and enhancing Vesak Zones across the country, including its involvement in the State Vesak Festival in Nuwara Eliya and several other Vesak Zones in Colombo.

Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks and civilians in the area participated in the celebration event.
