Commander of the Army Commends Retiring Major General’s Notable Service

Major General K.M.N. Kulasekara RWP RSP psc was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 08 April 2025, along with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after completing a distinguished career spanning 35 years.

Brief Profile of the Retiring Senior Officer:

Major General K.M.N. Kulasekara RWP RSP psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 17 November 1991, under Intake KDA 09. Upon successfully completing military training at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy in Ratmalana and the Sri Lanka Military Academy in Diyatalawa, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gemunu Watch on 22 November 1993. After steadily elevating through the ranks, he was promoted to Major General on 18 January 2025. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army effective from 16 April 2025, upon reaching 55 years of age.

Throughout his career, he held various appointments including Platoon Commander of the 9th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officer Commanding of the 9th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officer Commanding of the 1st and 9th Battalions of the Gemunu Watch, Officer Instructor at the Officer Cadet Wing at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, General Staff Officer 2 (Training) at the Headquarters of the 22 Infantry Division, General Staff Officer 2 at the Regimental Centre of the Gemunu Watch, Adjutant of the Sri Lanka Battalion in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Second-in-Command of the 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officiating General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) of the Directorate of Operations at Army Headquarters, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Staff Officer 1 (Career Planning) at the Military Secretary’s Branch at Army Headquarters, Staff Officer of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), Officiating Deputy Centre Commandant of the Regimental Centre of the Gemunu Watch, Colonel Training (Foreign) of the Directorate of Training, Commander of the 222 Infantry Brigade and 122 Infantry Brigade and Deputy Military Liaison Officer at the Ministry of Defence.

In recognition of his bravery in the face of the enemy, the Senior Officer was awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama and Rana Sura Padakkama (awarded three times).

The Senior Officer has completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career including the Basic Intelligence Officers Course, the United Nations Peacekeeping Pre-Deployment Training Course and the Army Command and Staff Course in Sri Lanka. He also attended the Young Officers’ Tactical Course in Pakistan, the Battalion Support Weapons (Officers) Course in India, the Junior Command Course in India and the Senior Command Course in India.

The Senior Officer has obtained higher educational and professional qualifications including a Diploma in Senior Level Defence Management from Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in India, a Diploma in Office Automation Systems from Science Land Information Technology (Private) Limited in Sri Lanka, a Diploma in English from the Skills Development Fund Limited (SDFL) in Sri Lanka, a Bachelor of Arts (Defence Studies) from the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy and a Master of Human Resource Management from the University of Colombo.
