The Sri Lanka Army, as part of its disaster relief initiatives, successfully addressed the water leakage issue in the Aluthdivulwewa Tank on 11th January 2025. The leakage, worsened by excessive rainfall, posed a significant risk of breaching the bund, endangering nearby communities. After two days of relentless effort, the repair operation was completed, safeguarding the area from potential disaster.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Major General J.P.C Peiris RWP RSP ndc, Commander of Security Forces (W), Major General W.M.S.C.K Wanasinghe RSP USP, General Officer Commanding 21 Infantry Division, and Brigadier B.A.M.P Balasuriya RSP, Commander of the 212 Infantry Brigade.
The mission demonstrated exceptional coordination and dedication, involving the Search and Rescue Team of the 7th (V) Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, troops from the 5th (V) Battalion the Gajaba Regiment, the Quick Reaction Team of the 21 Infantry Division, and the Riot Control Team of the 212 Infantry Brigade.
Over 120 Army troops worked tirelessly for two consecutive days in collaboration with the Irrigation Department in the Galenbindunuwewa area. They used sandbags and metals to secure the bund and prevent further damage with the support of residents in the area.
The swift and efficient intervention also enabled the resettlement of over 170 affected families, restoring normalcy in the area as quickly as possible. This operation highlights the Sri Lanka Army's steadfast commitment to disaster management and community welfare.
