Army Chief Graces Inter-Regiment Sports Championship 2024 as the Chief Guest

The awarding ceremony of the ‘Inter-Regiment Sports Championship 2024’ commenced at the Grand Maitland on 03 December 2024. Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, the Commander of the Army graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

In 2024, a series of 29 inter-regiment sports events were held at various regimental centers across the country. Brigadier L.K.T. Fernando RSP USP, Director of the Directorate of Sports, warmly welcomed the Commander of the Army upon his arrival at the venue.

The event commenced with the singing of the Army song, followed by a two-minute silence to commemorate the fallen war heroes.

The welcome speech was then delivered by Major General W.P.A.D.W Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu, the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, Colonel of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), and the Chairman of the Army Sports Committee. Subsequently, the first segment of the award ceremony was presented by Major General A.H.L.G Amarapala RWP RSP ndc psc, Commander of the Security Forces (West) and Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers.

Major General B.K.G.M.L Rodrigo RSP psc IG, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army and Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Artillery, then presented trophies to the winners.

Afterward, the Chairman of the Army Sports Committee presented awards and trophies to the runners-up in various events.

Later on, the Commander of the Army was invited to present trophies to the champion regiments in the ‘Inter-Regiment Sports Championship 2024’ along with cash incentives for sportsmen and sportswomen who brought international achievements during the recent year.

Following this, the Chairman of the Army Sports Committee presented a special memento to the Commander of the Army in appreciation of his presence at the event.
