Major General W.W.H.R.R.V.M.N.D.K.B Niyangoda RWP RSP VSV USP ndu psc, Adjutant General of Army Headquarters (AHQ), was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 12 July 2024, together with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a notable career of 35 years.
During the meeting, the Army Chief lauded the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his tenure, both during the war against terrorism and the post-war era. The Commander also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his dedicated family throughout his career.
In response, Major General W.W.H.R.R.V.M.N.D.K.B Niyangoda RWP RSP VSV USP ndu psc, expressed profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support given to him by the Army Chief. Toward the end of the interactions, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with gifts to his family.
Major General W.W.H.R.R.V.M.N.D.K.B Niyangoda RWP RSP VSV USP ndu psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in Intake 31A on 20 January 1989. Upon successful completion of military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa (SLMA), he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps on 05 April 1991. After steadily elevating through subsequent ranks during his service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 04 February 2022. The Senior Officer will be retiring from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army effective from 13 July 2024 upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointments of Adjutant General of Army Headquarters, Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Taekwondo Association.
He held various appointments during his career, including Group Commander of 1st Special Forces Regiment, Squadron Commander of 1st Regiment Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Officer Instructor of Sri Lanka Military Academy, Company Commander of Sri Lanka Military Academy, Chief Instructor of Armoured Corps Training Centre, Second-In-Command of 5th Regiment, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Tri Services Additional Contingent Commander of United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Commanding Officer of 10th Regiment Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Commanding Officer of 4th Regiment Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Directing Staff of Defence Services Command and Staff College, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) of Headquarters 11 Infantry Division, Colonel (Strategic and Doctrine) of Headquarters - Army Training Command, Military Liaison Officer of United Nations Stabilization Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Chief Instructor of Sri Lanka Military Academy, Commanding Officer of Sri Lanka Military Academy, Commander of 511 Infantry Brigade, Commander of 512 Infantry Brigade, Assistant Military Secretary 3 of Military Secretary’s Branch at Army Headquarters, Assistant Military Secretary 2 of Military Secretary’s Branch at Army Headquarters, Commandant of Sri Lanka Military Academy, General Officer Commanding of 54 Infantry Division, Commander of Security Forces (Central), Colonel Commandant - Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, and Adjutant General - Army Headquarters.
The Senior Officer has been awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama and Rana Sura Padakkama (Awarded for 6 Times) in appreciation of his dedicated service rendered during his tenure in the Sri Lanka Army.
He completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including Special Forces Basic Course, Special Forces Advanced Course, Operational Staff Duties Course, Battalion Support Weapons Officers’ Course, Army Command and Staff Course, Peace Support Operations Pre Deployment Training Course, International Humanitarian Law Advanced Refresher Training Course, International Humanitarian Law & Human Rights Basic Instructor Course, United Nations Staff Officers Course, United Nations Military Observer Course, Commando Officers Course - India, Basic Parachute Course - India, Mid-Career Course - Pakistan, Electronics Instructor Officer Course - India, Combat Group Commanders Course - India, Military Induction Training Course - Haiti and National Security and War Course - Pakistan.
